What to do if: You Get in a Car Accident

Auto accidents happen. Knowing what to do in the occurance of an accident can help you handle the situation calmly and take the proper course of action.

  • Make sure there are no injuries. Always report an accident to the police if there is an injured party or if total damages to all vehicles exceed $1,000.
  • Be safe. If your car is still driveable, move to safe location nearby and put on your hazard lights on. If your car is disabled, put your hazard lights on and remain seated with your seatbelt fastened.
  • Never accept fault at the scene of the accident, even if you think you may be responsible.
  • Get the information of the other driver(s) as well as as any witnesses to the accident. Do not consider passengers or people known to either party.
